Course Number (TRAN5500)

CDL training truck
Upon completion of this series the participant will gain valuable knowledge of and experience with a class A and B Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV). The participant will also be prepared to obtain a Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A. This series ensures participants complete the entire training in a single track of courses. Tuition includes: classroom training, behind-the-wheel training, and textbooks. All other fees are the responsibility of the participant.

STEP 1
Visit our office to fill out an application form and schedule a reading assessment. Same day appointments are available. Please allow yourself two hours to complete this task. If you have received a post-secondary degree you are exempt from this requirement. You will receive a letter notifying you of your test results within two weeks. STEP 2
Submit the following documents:

  1. Copy of a valid State of Hawaii Passenger Vehicle Driver’s License
  2. Hawaii Driver History Record
  3. Medical Examiners Report Form and a Medical Examiner’s Certificate conducted by a licensed medical examiner.

STEP 3
Complete your enrollment by submitting payment for the cost of the required courses. We do not offer payment plans, but we do work with our State and County workforce development partners who may be able to assist.

Participants must also pass the Gates-MacGinitie reading test with an 11th grade level or higher prior to enrollment.

Participants interested in the Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) Training Program must pass the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test with an 11th grade level or higher prior to enrollment.

  1. You must be at least 21 years old at the start of the training program
  2. A valid State of Hawaii Passenger Vehicle Drivers License
  3. Hawaii Driver History Record
  4. A Medical Examiners Report Form and A Medical Examiner's Certificate conducted by a licensed medical examiner.
  5. Complete Student Participant Information Sheet (in office)

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. Understand state and federal CDL operator requirements, vehicle controls, and safety rules as demonstrated by successfully passing the State of Hawaii CDL permitting exam.
  2. Identify, inspect and assess a truck’s critical items for safe operating conditions.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency of the basic CMV controls and their functions.
  4. Demonstrate proficiency in the principles of CMV safe operation skills.
  5. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of all CMV rules as demonstrated by successfully obtaining a State of Hawaii CDL license.
