OCEWD Summer Camp 2018

​Are you looking for a great summer experience for your kids? Send them to Leeward Community College, Office of Continuing Education & Workforce Development (OCEWD) Summer Camp. We're opening our doors to kids 12-16 years old, to introduce them to our campus and engage in hands-on activities in a fun and inclusive environment.

Choose from four excellent camps (below). You may register for your child in-person (at our office) or online (below).

Mechatronics - integrated engineering camp

Days: M, T, Th, F   Time: 8:00am-11:30am   Total Hours: 28    Cost: $300

Spark your child's imagination with Sparkfun™ - and let their ideas come to life! This STEM camp is ultimately a crash course in integrated engineering. Students will work on projects that combine electronic and mechanical devices with microcontrollers to create robotic machines - programming microcontrollers, using break out boards, testing equipment, and using a 3D printer. They'll experience a breadth of activities from iterative design to machine control theory and practice, and they will have the opportunity to build their own device.

*Cost includes Sparkfun™ kit and learning materials. Students do not need to bring anything to class.

4D Career Exploration (Discover, Define, Determine, and Develop)

Days: M, T, W, Th, F   Time: 9:00am-12:00pm   Total Hours: 30   Cost: $300

Your child will Discover, Define, Determine, and Develop their future career path while having fun! They will go behind the scenes and interact with professionals from different career fields to engage in experiential learning that presents career related topics in new and fresh ways (i.e. demonstrations, group work, small projects). At the end of the program, students will envision a plan for accomplishing their dream. This camp will help establish a seamless pipeline from middle school to high school, college, and the workforce.
  • ​Learn the value of building positive relationships for future career networks
  • Uncover possible careers with Career Coach
  • Identify learning styles and personality type
  • Explore potential Careers through fun and interactive activities
  • Experience guest speakers in the career field of interest
  • Create a plan to follow a potential career pathway
  • Provide parents with a description of progress and possible classes to enroll their child in for high school, grades to maintain, cost of college

Flex your creative muscle

Days: M, T, W, Th, F   Time: 1:00pm-4:00pm   Total Hours: 30   Cost: $300

Students will showcase their (creative) strength through the creative process by problem solving, brainstorming, sketching, and designing using Adobe Creative (Photoshop and Illustrator) software. They'll learn about the elements of art, and principles of design, to create authentic pixel and vector-based graphics which they can screen print onto their own personalized t-shirt!​

​*If your child would like to screen print their personalized design on a t-shirt please bring one (blank) shirt to class. We will not be providing t-shirts.

Hooked on Fishing

Days: M, Th   Time: 8:30am-12:30pm   Total Hours: 16   Cost: $300

If you've ever heard your child say, "Take me fishing", this summer camp is a great way to get them started. Students will meet on campus and learn knot tying, casting, fish location techniques, bait and lure selections, and basic knowledge of tides and fishing regulations. Although the camp and activities will be held on dry land (here on campus), students will learn about fresh and salt water fishing. Team activities and competitions will build confidence and friendships– maybe even lead to new fishing buddies!

*Cost includes fishing supplies and learning materials. Students do not need to bring anything to class.
