​HLTH5600 - Pharmacy Technician

​Course Description
There's a growing demand for pharmacy technicians in Hawaii as a result of our rapidly growing healthcare industry. Separate yourself from the competition through our course which provides the skills and knowledge necessary to receive national certification, and build the foundation for a pharmaceutical career. Employers will recognize that you're more qualified to offer effective patient care and service. Besides learning the history of pharmaceutical medicine, you'll develop skills in calculations, drug classification, processing, inventory and billing - various roles of a Pharmacy Technician in retail and hospital settings.
Externship opportunities are available for students who successfully complete the program. Students will learn and observe from the pharmacy technician on site. They will also learn customer service skills and work within the Walgreens system.
Course fees include textbooks, practice tests, the PTCE exam, and an externship opportunity.

Prerequisites
ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or GED, basic computer and typing skills (35+ wpm), pass the math assessment test with 9th grade or higher, and a criminal abstract no older than 30 days.

We now offer two options for a pharmacy externship. Through our partnerships with Walgreens and CVS Health, you have even more opportunities to gain working experience in a real pharmacy. See details below.

Walgreens Externship Program

​Walgreens, the nation's largest drug retailer, is offering students of pharmacy technician training programs an externship at a local store. It is an unpaid externship, but participants will gain valuable exposure through this unique opportunity. Call 455-0477 for more information.
  • No compensation for externship
  • Minimum 18 years old
  • Learn and observe Pharmacy Technician on-site– learn customer service skills, process insurance, and working within the Walgreens system 
  • Number of extern hours determined by Pharmacy Technician instructor
  • Students are expected to abide by Walgreens rules, regulations, policies, and procedures while on-site
  • Externship concludes when Pharmacy Technician class ends
Walgreens also offers a job shadowing experience for high schoolers. Must be 16 years or older, and student would be shadowing a cashier or stock clerk– no cash handling or pharmacy exposure. Store manager will determine specific duties. Email Joy Mahiko, jmahiko@hawaii.edu for more information.

CVS Health Externship Program

  • 40 stores on O‘ahu provide many opportunities to extern locally, with possibility of future employment
  • 100 hours externship
  • Students are expected to abide by CVS Health rules, regulations, policies, and procedures while on-site
  • Externship concludes when Pharmacy Technician class ends
A new internal cross-train position, called Clerk Cashier/Rx, allows a candidate to be hired as a clerk cashier if there are no immediate openings in the pharmacy. They can be promoted to the cross train position, learning/training as all new pharmacy hires would, then when a position becomes available that cross-trained worker will be the first to be promoted to the pharmacy. The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification, is the gold standard of credentialing for pharmacy technicians. It is preferred, and sometimes required, for job applicants to be CPhTs.
